PIX has established itself as one of the main payment methods in Brazil, offering speed, 24/7 availability, and lower transaction costs.

Its infrastructure is regulated and supervised by the Central Bank, ensuring a high level of operational security.

However, as with any widely used tool, PIX has also been exploited by criminals who use social engineering techniques to deceive users.

In this content, we have gathered the main PIX-related scams and practical prevention guidelines.

Main PIX Scams: The 5 Most Common Ones

Fraud involving PIX has caused increasingly significant financial losses in Brazil.

In 2024, estimated losses reached R$ 4.941 billion, representing approximately a 70% increase compared to 2023, when losses totaled R$ 2.911 billion.

These figures highlight the evolution of fraud attempts and reinforce the importance of preventive measures and financial education for both individuals and businesses.

Below are the most common scams currently in use and how to avoid them.

1. Identity Theft via WhatsApp

One of the most common scams involves the misuse of a person’s profile photo to request transfers from family members or friends.

How it works

The criminal:

  • Copies the victim’s profile picture from social media;

  • Creates a new phone number;

  • Contacts close acquaintances;

  • Claims to have changed their number;

  • Requests a PIX transfer, claiming urgency.

The request usually involves emergency situations such as bank account blockage, bill payments, or health issues.

How to protect yourself

  • Always confirm financial requests by calling the old number.

  • Be suspicious of urgent and unusual requests.

  • Enable two-step verification on WhatsApp.

  • Restrict your profile photo visibility to contacts only.

2. Fake Websites Imitating Well-Known Stores

Scammers create fraudulent websites that mimic major retailers, especially during promotional periods.

How it works

  • Creation of a website visually similar to the original;

  • Products advertised at prices far below market value;

  • Payment requested via PIX;

  • Incompatible or nonexistent company registration (CNPJ).

After payment, the consumer does not receive the product and loses the transferred amount.

How to protect yourself

  • Carefully check the website URL.

  • Verify the company registration number.

  • Review the company’s reputation on public platforms.

  • Be wary of excessive discounts.

  • Always confirm the recipient’s name before completing the PIX payment.

3. Fake Bank or Financial Institution Contact

In this scam, the criminal poses as a bank or financial institution employee.

How it works

  • Phone call reporting suspicious activity;

  • Instructions to make a PIX transfer to “protect” or “cancel” the transaction;

  • Request for SMS or token verification codes.

Legitimate financial institutions do not request transfers to block fraud, nor do they ask for passwords or authentication codes by phone.

How to protect yourself

  • End the call and contact the institution through official channels.

  • Never share passwords, tokens, or verification codes.

  • Use only official contact information listed on the company’s website.

4. Tampered QR Code

This scam can occur in both physical and digital environments.

How it works

  • Replacement of the original QR Code with a fraudulent one;

  • Sending a fake QR Code via message;

  • Payment directed to the scammer’s account.

How to protect yourself

  • Always check the recipient’s name displayed before confirming payment.

  • In physical stores, confirm the information with staff.

  • Avoid making payments from QR Codes sent by unknown third parties.

5. Fake Payment Receipt

Very common in transactions between individuals.

How it works

  • The scammer sends a manipulated PIX receipt;

  • Requests immediate delivery of the product;

  • The amount is not actually credited to the victim’s account.

How to protect yourself

  • Never deliver products or services based solely on receipts.

  • Confirm the credit directly in your bank statement.

  • Enable automatic payment notifications.

What to Do If You Suspect Fraud?

If you identify a fraudulent transaction:

  • Immediately notify your financial institution;

  • Request activation of the Special Refund Mechanism (MED);

  • File a police report;

  • Preserve records, messages, and receipts.

Acting quickly increases the chances of blocking or recovering the funds.

Security and Responsibility

PIX is a secure infrastructure with multiple layers of technological protection. However, most scams occur through psychological manipulation and improper acquisition of information.

The best prevention strategy combines:

  • Attention during transactions;

  • Confirmation of recipient details;

  • Exclusive use of official channels;

  • Financial and digital education.

We recommend that clients and partners adopt a preventive approach and always seek information from official sources.

Responsible use of PIX allows users to enjoy all the benefits of the technology with safety and peace of mind.
